Billionaires Sheryl Sandberg And Elaine Wynn Each Pledge $1 Million To Planned Parenthood

The healthcare non-profit organization – Planned Parenthood – received one million dollar donations from two of the United States’ Richest Self-Made Women in the recent days.

Elaine Wynn, casino magnate and cofounder of Wynn Resorts, a Las Vegas-based chain, announced that she had given the reproductive healthcare nonprofit organization a $1 million donation, as it faces the risks of being defunded by the current Trump administration.

Wynn’s generous donation was first reported by the Fortune magazine, and the donation can be said to be partially inspired by her fellow billionaire’s (Sheryl Sandberg) one million dollar donation earlier in the month.

Sheryl Sandberg, the Facebook Chief Operating Officer, is a longstanding donor to Planned Parenthood. She, however, took her donations up a notch after an executive order which reinstates a ‘global gag rule’ policy was signed by President Donald Trump, which moves to deny funding to overseas organizations that support and provide abortion.

Following the decision, the Facebook COO, who is the fourteenth United States’ richest self-made woman, berated the executive order on her Facebook page. She intoned that the most effective method to ensure the prevention of abortion is to facilitate an increased family planning services, and not move to decrease them. She stated that women’s rights are important human rights, and that health care is meant to be a basic right. She then reiterated the need to support women all around the world.

Refunnery29 was the first to report Sherryl Sandberg’s $1 million, which is part of a whole swell in pro-choice donations since Trump’s election. In late December, the reproductive healthcare nonprofit organization announced an increase of up to 40-fold. This was made up of 70% donations from new supporters.

According to the Fortune magazine, the one million dollar gift given by the 74-year-old Elaine Wynn will be divided between Planned Parenthood’s national federation and the casino magnate’s affiliate Rocky Mountain chapter.

The twelfth United States’ richest self-made woman who is the ex-wife of Steve Wynn, the gambling tycoon, lives in Las Vegas, and is probably best known as an arts patron. She currently serves as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art co-chair, and she pledged about 50 million dollars towards the construction of the museum’s permanent collection new home in April 2016.

In 2013, she purchased the “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” triptych by Francis Bacon for $1142.4 million – the then highest price paid for an art work. Also in 2010, the ‘queen of Las Vegas’ as she popularly referred to, was appointed by then-President Obama to the esteemed John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts board. The position became vacant after her ex-husband stepped down earlier the same year.

Elaine Wynn’s one million dollar donation to the reproductive healthcare nonprofit organization comes after a campaign of support for Planned Parenthood at the New York Fashion Week. Fellow Forbes United States’ Richest Self-Made Women list members – Tory Burch and Diane von Furstenberg, as well as more than forty designers, were involved in the campaign to raise awareness, and encourage donations to the organization from wealthy fashion patrons.
